- Start by being firm with pupils: you can relax later
- Get silence before you start speaking to the class.
- Control the pupils' entry to the classroom.
- Know and use the pupils' names.
- Prepare lessons thoroughly and structure them firmly
- Arrive at the classroom before the pupils.
- Prepare furniture and apparatus before the pupils arrive.
- Know how to use apparatus and be familiar with
experiments before you use them in class.
- Start the lesson with a 'bang' and sustain interest and
curiosity
- Give clear instructions.
- Learn voice control.
- Have additional material prepared to cope, eg with bright
and slow pupils' needs.
- Look at the class when speaking and learn how to scan.
- Make written work appropriate (eg to the age ability,
cultural background of pupils).
- Develop an effective question technique.
- Develop the art of timing your lesson to fit the
available period.
- Vary your teaching techniques.
- Anticipate discipline problems and act quickly.
- Be firm and consistent in giving punishments.
- Avoid confrontation.
- Clarify and insist on YOUR standards.
- Show yourself as a helper or facilitator to the pupils.
- Don't patronise pupils, treat them as responsible beings.
- Use humour constructively
